Evaluating Satellite Precipitation Estimates Over Oceans Using Passive Aquatic Listeners

نویسندگان

چکیده

Passive aquatic listeners (PALs) provide high-quality, high-resolution estimates of precipitation over ocean regions, but have been underutilized as a reference data set for the evaluation satellite-based (SPEs). PALs are uniquely suited this purpose due to their 5 km surface listening area when sampling at 1 depth on drifting Argo Floats, providing rain rate spatial scale similar native grid spacing many SPEs. In study we compare three SPE products (IMERG, CMORPH, and PDIR-Now) PAL measurements. Evaluations performed tropical, extratropical, global oceans spatiotemporal resolution longer time scales. We find SPEs frequency distributions PAL, with biases varying performance characteristics that dependent region scale.

Satellite retrieval of aerosol absorption over the oceans using sunglint

[1] Aerosol absorption of sunlight, in particular by black carbon soot and dark organic material produced from incomplete combustion of fossil fuel and from vegetation fires, is emerging as a key component of climate forcing. However, global characterization of black carbon emissions, distribution and absorption of sunlight cannot be determined within a factor of 5. Here we propose that the oce...

Precipitation and Latent Heating Distributions from Satellite Passive Microwave Radiometry. Part II: Evaluation of Estimates Using Independent Data

Rainfall rate estimates from spaceborne microwave radiometers are generally accepted as reliable by a majority of the atmospheric science community. One of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) facility rain-rate algorithms is based upon passive microwave observations from the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI). In Part I of this series, improvements of the TMI algorithm that are required to ...

Evaluating the Applicability of Four Latest Satellite-Gauge Combined Precipitation Estimates for Extreme Precipitation and Streamflow Predictions over the Upper Yellow River Basins in China

This study aimed to statistically and hydrologically assess the performance of the four latest and widely used satellite–gauge combined precipitation estimates (SGPEs), namely CRT (CMORPH CRT), BLD (CMORPH BLD), CDR (PERSIANN CDR), 3B42 (TMPA 3B42 version 7) over the upper yellow river basins (UYRB) in china during 2001–2012 time period. The performances of the SGPEs were compared with the Chin...

Error-Component Analysis of TRMM-Based Multi-Satellite Precipitation Estimates over Mainland China

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-Satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) products have been widely used, but their error and uncertainty characteristics over diverse climate regimes still need to be quantified. In this study, we focused on a systematic evaluation of TMPA’s error characteristics over mainland China, with an improved error-component analysis procedure. We perf...
